Women against corruption
By naming two women to the high court, Kirchner seeks an independent body.

Latinamerica press - Mar 18, 2004

For the first time in the democratic history of Argentina, two of nine members of the Supreme Court of Justice are likely to be women. The designation of Carmen Argibay on Dec. 30 and Elena Highton de Nolasco on Feb. 17 demonstrates President Néstor Kirchner’s determination to clean up the justice system while putting an end to discrimination.

Giving a signal that it is betting in favor of ethics in public service, the government on Jan. 2 also appointed former deputy Graciela Ocaña to head the Integral Plan for the Aged (PAMI), which provides social and health services to pensioners. An entity with an annual budget of more than $1 billion, it is considered to be one of the main focal points of official corruption.
