Introduction to finance

Description
The objective of this course is to provide students with a general understanding of finance. We will work on the time value of money, learn how investors think about the value of streams of cash flows, conduct financial statements analysis and explore how they can be used to make sound financial decisions. We will explore the investment choice criteria and the process to make good capital investment choice decisions. We will consider what may be the most fundamental question facing investors and financial economists alike when we study risk. We will consider what it means for an investment to be risky, and examine methods of valuing risky assets.

This course is offered in English in the winter semester only. This course is the English version of GSF-1000 Finance. Only one of those two courses will be accepted. The student is allowed to take assignments and exams in French. This course section is accessible to students from other programs with the exception of students in the Certificate in Administration program. Although this course is not accessible to students in the Certificate in Administration program, you may send your request to the Direction de programmes to register for this course if you demonstrate successful completion of College Mathematics 103, 105 and 203 or their equivalents. This course is offered in in-person delivery mode where classes are offered in the physical presence of the student and teacher, according to a pre-determined schedule. On-campus presence is required. Classes are not recorded. If proctored exams are planned for this course, they will take place on campus only and may be held at times other than the scheduled class times, including evenings and weekends.
