Strategy and Structure of Firms

Description
In this course, students develop the analytical and critical thinking skills necessary for making strategic decisions in an uncertain global environment. Using theory and information from the corporate context, students will analyze the firm's external and internal environments with the goal of identifying actual and potential sources of competitive advantage. Ultimately, they will learn to formulate, implement and evaluate cross-functional decisions. Topics include : an introduction to strategic management, measures of firm performance, analysis of external and internal environments, business-level strategy, corporate-level strategy, acquisition and restructuring strategies, international strategies, corporate governance, organizational structures and controls, strategic leadership, and corporate social responsibility.

This course is the English version of MNG-6010 Stratégie et structure de l'entreprise. Only one of these two courses will be recognized in a student’s program. Students who have previously taken a strategy course equivalent to ADM-3104 " Strategic Management" from the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) cannot register for this course. The prerequisites for students of an MBA with options are the following: GSF-6037, GSO-6006 AND MRK-6003. The prerequisites for International Development and Humanitarian Management students are the following: CTB-6007 AND GIE-6001 AND MNG-6157. This course is offered in in-person delivery mode where classes are offered in the physical presence of the student and teacher, according to a pre-determined schedule. On-campus presence is required. Classes are not recorded. If proctored exams are planned for this course, they will take place on campus only and may be held at times other than the scheduled class times, including evenings and weekends.

This course is the English version of MNG-6010 Stratégie et structure de l'entreprise. Only one of these two courses will be recognized in a student’s program. Students who have previously taken a strategy course equivalent to ADM-3104 " Strategic Management" from the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) cannot register for this course. The prerequisites for students of an MBA with options are the following: GSF-6037, GSO-6006 AND MRK-6003. The prerequisites for International Development and Humanitarian Management students are the following: CTB-6007 AND GIE-6001 AND MNG-6157. This course, given in distance learning delivery mode, includes a few synchronous virtual classes, according to a predetermined schedule. Attendance at the synchronous classes is strongly recommended. Class recordings are usually made available for replay. Details of the recordings per class are indicated in the course outline. If proctored exams are planned for this course, they require physical presence on campus or at one of the off-campus exam centres. They are held evenings and weekends and, where applicable, may therefore be held at times other than the scheduled synchronous class times.
