June 17-19, 2019
Located in Québec City, Canada, Université Laval, its Faculty of Business Administration (FSA ULaval) and Department of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (FIRE) will be hosting the 36th International Conference of the French Finance Association (AFFI) in 2019.
For the very first time, the AFFI Annual Conference will be held outside Europe. Université Laval is both honoured and proud to have the privilege of being the first to hold this Conference in North America and to welcome you to Québec City, the capital of the Province of Québec.
Québec City is the cradle of the French-speaking North America and is recognize by the UNESCO World Heritage. Quebec City ranks among the most visited cities in the world for its safety, hospitality, quality of life and outstanding beauty. Its picturesque Old City is a living museum of narrow cobblestone streets, 17th and 18th Century buildings and soaring church spires, with the superb Fairmont Le Château Frontenac Hotel towering above it all.
The AFFI is a community of scholars and practitioners working together to create and disseminate knowledge related to finance. The AFFI organizes two annual meetings (Annual Conference and Paris December Finance Meeting organized jointly with EUROFIDAI) with global participation. The AFFI also publishes three journals covering a wide variety of finance-related subject areas, and formally recognizes the contributions of researchers who enhance policy and business decision making in the field of finance. The AFFI’s Annual Conference has become a major international forum for communicating, encouraging, and celebrating the latest research in finance.
AFFI 2019 Québec City Conference will bring together scholars in the fields of finance, investment, economics, wealth management and the broader social science disciplines concerned with financial topics and issues. It also aims to attract practitioners and policy makers interested in these fields. Interested scholars and practitioners are welcome to submit papers in all areas of finance and to participate in the discussion of the latest theoretical and empirical research. Authors of accepted papers are expected to serve as chair and/or discussant of a paper in their field. The conference will establish an inclusive and energizing atmosphere. All papers will receive a double-blind review. The AFFI also incorporates doctoral students engaged in financial research and education.

Graduation Hall (Salle des Promotions) of the Séminaire de Québec
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Our Gala Dinner will be held in the magnificent Graduation Hall (Salle des Promotions) of the Séminaire de Québec, in the heart of Old Québec. Université Laval was founded in 1852, with roots in the founding of the Séminaire de Québec in 1663, making it the oldest centre of higher education in Canada and the first North American institution to offer higher education in French. Formerly used for official ceremonies to mark the life of the university, the Graduation Hall (Salle des Promotions) of the Séminaire de Québec has transcended time and leaves a lasting impression. The Graduation Hall is located within the central building of the Séminaire de Québec, whose construction began in 1854. The building was recently renamed in honour of Camille Roy, an eminent Rector of Université Laval. The emblematic lanterns and mansard roof, designed by Joseph-Ferdinand Peachy and added in 1875, define its Second Empire style and celebrate the influence of French culture in the Americas.
Music by The Painchaud Family
Multi-instrumentalists showing unique musical skills, the 4 members of The Painchaud Family are brothers and sister. They all entered the Music Conservatory of Quebec as children. Among them, there are soloists with the Quebec Symphonic Orchestra, a Grammy Awards nominee and a Juno Awards nominee.
Audiences from New York, Paris, Las Vegas, San Diego Cancun, Bahamas and, more recently, at the G7 Meeting in La Malbaie, have enjoyed The Painchaud Family’s unique performance for the last 15 years. They play popular songs in a humorous way and their one-hour act features exclusive numbers: balancing guitarist act, fired up violin, acrobatic violin and more. Ask your all-time favourites during their special requests segment.

To discover
“Charlevoix” and the south shore
Charlevoix (north shore of the St-Lawrence river) is really worth seeing. It is about a 2-hour drive (route 138) from Québec City. It is certainly worth stopping at Baie-St-Paul and sleeping for one or two nights at La Malbaie (suggestion: the Manoir Richelieu). There are three subsequent alternatives:
1. Getting back to Québec City using the same road.
2. Taking the ferry from Saint-Siméon to Rivière-du-Loup. Rivière-du-Loup (south shore of the St-Lawrence river) is one of the areas in the world with the most beautiful sunsets (seriously). Whale watching tours are available. It is worth sleeping there for a night or two. When getting back to Québec City on Highway 20, make sure to stop in Kamouraska.
3. Continuing along route 138 to Tadoussac and sleeping there for one night. Whale watching tours are available. Then, you can head to Forestville and take a ferry to Rimouski (south shore of the St-Lawrence river). You can stay in Rimouski for a few nights (very nice sunsets as well). Make sure to visit the Parc du Bic as well as the Jardins de Métis – and the “Doors to Hell” (Portes de l’Enfer). You can then get back to Québec City on Highway 20/route 132.
Gaspé Peninsula
One of the nicest tourist itineraries is the “tour de la Gaspésie” (Gaspé Peninsula). Take Highway 20 then route 132. Plan to sleep for two nights in Rimouski, two nights at the Gîte du Mont-Albert (near Ste-Anne-des-Monts), two nights in Gaspé (Parc Forillon), two nights in Percé (the scenary there is just gorgeous; make sure to take the boat tour to Île Bonaventure), two nights in Carleton, then two nights in Rivière-du-Loup.
Beyond the Province of Québec
The Thousand-Islands area in Eastern Ontario is a world-renowned tourist destination. To get there, you first need to go to Montréal (this is a very lively city; you may want to spend a few days there) and then continue for about 2.5 hours on Highway 401 towards Toronto.
Another nice area to visit is the Maritime provinces. One nice and relaxing town is Shédiac, in New-Brunswick. It takes about 8 hours to get there from Québec City. Once there, you are very close to Prince-Edward Island. Cape Breton is also not that far away.
