For English, you can take the VEPT placement test administered (École de langues de l’Université Laval website) (in French only). Here are the required scores:

• Undergraduate level: at least 58
• Master’s level: at least 63

If your score is below the baseline requirement, you must pass the following courses before you leave:

• Undergraduate level: ANL-3010 Advanced English I or ANL-3011 Intensive English IV
• Master’s level: ANL-3020 Advanced English II

Please note that some partner universities require a passing score on specific placement tests:

• IELTS
• TOEIC (in French only) – «Listening and Reading» version
• TOEFL iBT – version «At Test Center»

If you choose to take courses in a language other than English, here are the ones that must be completed before you leave.

Read carefully before opening your file

A number of elements can influence your choice of destination for your study stay abroad. Other factors may also influence which partner universities will be proposed to you. First, we suggest you consider the following points:

• Consult the academic calendars of our partner universities.
• Check which partner universities accept student exchanges based on your academic level.
• Make sure you meet the admission and language requirements specific to each partner university.
• Read the international study stay reports from ULaval students (in French only).
• Find out about the cost of living in the countries that interest you.
• Find out about the safety index and crime rates in the countries that interest you.

In order to undertake a study stay abroad, you must first fill out the form to open your file. The form must be filled out after having completed your personal reflection regarding your project, your goals and your destination (country) preferences. Based on the information provided in the form, we will propose three universities where you could undertake your study stay.

You must also make a non-refundable payment of $100 to open your file. You must also respect the deadlines indicated in the “Important deadlines” section.

In the weeks after we receive your form and payment, you will receive an official invitation to a preparatory interview. Please note that there may be a certain delay if payment is made several months in advance.

The preparatory interview is a critical step in the process. It is used to propose three universities where you could undertake your study stay. These universities are selected based on your academic profile, your goals and compatibility with your academic program.

You are expected to come to this meeting with a fully developed and thought-out plan, since the three proposed universities are final and cannot be changed. No changes or additions to your destination can be made after this step.

Lastly, please note that, after this meeting, any postponement of your study stay to a semester that is later than the one specified in your form will result in an additional fee of $25.

You will be assigned a university from the universities proposed at the preparatory interview. Assignments are based on the following criteria:

• the order of priority you have selected for each proposed university;
• the number of places available, as indicated in the list of partner universities;
• proof of language proficiency required by the partner university;
• your program average weighted according to the number of credits completed at the time of award;;
• academic relevance.

You will have 48 hours to accept or refuse this offer. 

To confirm your acceptance of the offer, you must pay the non-refundable $50 participation fee. This amount includes, among other things, a pre-departure information meeting, a networking cocktail and an FSA ULaval hoodie. A payment link will be sent to you by email. You will receive support from the International Relations and Development Service to complete the rest of the procedures.

If you refuse the offer, we will send you another partner university option from the proposed destinations and where places are still available.

In the days that follow the assignment of partner universities, you will be invited to a mandatory online pre-departure meeting. During this meeting, we will present the administrative procedures you will have to undertake and provide you with access to a site in which we have listed all of the tools you will need to successfully complete your international project.

Anyone admitted to an FSA ULaval bachelor’s or master’s program can register for an international study stay.

If your official admission to your program has not yet been confirmed, you may still submit your application during the regular registration period. However, your stay will only be confirmed once you have been admitted to your program.

Late registration to an international study stay may only be accepted for students who are:

• international double-degree project participants;
• admitted to a master’s program after the first international study stay registration deadline;
• enrolled in a program that includes an international study stay scheduled for the final semester before receiving their degree.

Applications will be processed after those that were submitted during the regular registration period.
