Application for Recognition
Application to Have a Course or Credits Recognized
You may be granted two types of equivalencies under certain conditions:
Course equivalency: The content of a course completed at the same academic level at another university institution corresponds to the content of a course that is contributory to the program in question.
Credit equivalency: The content of an educational activity or a set of educational activities completed at the same academic level at another university institution corresponds to a portion of the content of the program in question.
Check beforehand
You must check whether the course you wish to have recognized currently exists in Université Laval’s catalogue des équivalences.
- The course is listed in the catalogue and an equivalency is recognized: You must fill out and submit the course equivalency application form.
- The course is not listed in the catalogue: The Program Directorate must conduct an analysis, which may take a few weeks to complete. Submit your application as soon as possible. If the course must be taken in your next semester, we cannot guarantee that the decision will be rendered before the end of the course modification or withdrawal period.
Submitting your application
Before submitting your application, you must first have received an offer of admission and completed your enrolment in a program of study at FSA ULaval.
You must fill out the course equivalency application form.
Important
An undergraduate course cannot be recognized in a master’s program. You must therefore make sure that the course in question is in fact a master’s-level course.
The Program Directorate reserves the right to refuse courses that were completed several years in the past.
Equivalency recognition
In order for your equivalency to be recognized, the university institution at which you have completed the course or activity must send your official transcript directly to Université Laval’s Registrar’s Office (photocopies or digital submissions are not accepted).
For more details, refer to articles 4.9 to 4.14 of the Règlement des études de l’Université Laval (Université Laval academic regulations – in French only).

Submitting your application
Before submitting your application, you must first have received an offer of admission and completed your enrolment in a program of study at FSA ULaval.
You must fill out an autorisation d’études hors établissement (aehe) application on the Bureau de la coopération interuniversitaire (BCI) platform, enclose the detailed course outline, and indicate:
- the course in your program of study that corresponds to the course you wish to take at the other institution;
- the reason(s) you are unable to take the course at FSA ULaval.
Important
An undergraduate course cannot be recognized in a master’s program. You must therefore make sure that the course in question is in fact a master’s-level course.
Based on your academic record and the justification presented, the Program Directorate reserves the right to deny your application under the Règlement des études. For more details, refer to articles 4.9 to 4.14 of the Règlement des études de l’Université Laval (Université Laval academic regulations – in French only).
Processing your application
Once it has been submitted via the BCI platform, the Program Directorate will analyze your application.
Your application is approved: The Registrar’s Office at Université Laval (your home university) will notify the host university. If the host university accepts your application, your enrolment will be confirmed via the BCI platform.
Your application is denied by the Program Directorate or the host university: The denial will be indicated via the BCI platform.
Equivalency recognition
When you take a course as part of the BCI agreement, you are enrolled at Université Laval under the code “Études hors établissement (EHE)” (tuition is payable to Université Laval). Once your grade has been issued, the host university will send it electronically to Université Laval’s Registrar’s Office and the equivalency will then be entered in your record for the semester in question.

Before submitting your application, you must first have received an offer of admission and completed your enrolment in a program of study at FSA ULaval.
You must fill out the course equivalency application form and indicate:
- the program course that corresponds to the course you wish to take at the other institution. Make sure that it is worth 3 credits and that it meets the program’s objectives and requirements. At the master’s level, the course must correspond to Master II or equivalent based on the educational system. In addition, one ULaval credit represents 45 hours of work, which adds up to 135 hours for a 3-credit course (e.g., 3 ULaval credits = 6 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System – ECTS);
- the reason(s) you are unable to take the course at FSA ULaval.
In addition a course outline must be submitted describing the following elements:
- the course objectives;
- the course content;
- the bibliography;
- the assessment methods and grading scale;
- the weighting of the course: number of credits, coefficient, etc.;
- any specific terms of the educational activity, as well as the professor’s contact information.
To be admissible, the course outline must:
- be written in French, English or Spanish. Any document written in another language must be translated by a certified translator and bear an official seal;
- be sent to us via official channels (no copy/pasted texts), either directly by the university institution or the professor responsible for the course, or by providing us with the relevant page of the institution’s official website, if the course outline is available online.

Equivalency recognition
If this is your first semester of enrolment, the equivalency will be entered in your record for your second semester in the program.
In order for your equivalency to be recognized, an official transcript is required. An official transcript is an original document issued by an educational institution. You may also submit a certified copy of the original document bearing the seal of the person authorized to issue the certified copy (justice of the peace, notary, attorney, embassy or consular attaché, issuer of the document, etc.).
If you have not already done so, the transcript must be sent to Université Laval’s Registrar’s Office, in person or by mail, at the following address:
