Language requirements
French-language proficiency is a graduation requirement for the Global Business MBA Program.
You are deemed to satisfy the French proficiency requirement if you have completed any of the following:
- elementary or secondary education in French;
- a Diploma of College Studies (DCS) in French in Québec and passed the uniform French test; or
- a university degree in French.
Since we assess your French proficiency on the basis of the language of instruction in your prior education, and not whether French is your first language, you may have to prove you have the required level of French proficiency as indicated in your offer of admission. If you are a native French speaker, please contact us at etudes@fsa.ulaval.ca for a short oral interview for validation.
Recommended for students with some knowledge (intermediate) of French
At Université Laval, the Test de français (TCF tout public), français langue étrangère ou seconde is used to determine French proficiency. You must obtain the following scores:
- compulsory exams – at least 300 out of 699 (TCF-TP);
- written expression exam – at least 2 out of 20 (TCF-TP/EÉ).
The results of other tests may be considered if they include a written expression component and were taken within the previous 2 years.
Register for the Test de français (TCF tout public) – in French only
Recommended for students with little or no knowledge of French
At Université Laval, the École de langues (ÉLUL) offers a series of French as a foreign language courses throughout the year. The level of proficiency required to graduate corresponds to the course titled FLS-1114 Langue orale et écrite II.
Before enrolling in a French course, you must take an online placement test (Test Laval). The ÉLUL uses the results of this test to recommend French courses that are appropriate for your level of proficiency. To register, contact the ÉLUL at fls@elul.ulaval.ca and indicate:
- your name;
- your NI (UL Identification Number);
- your program (Global Business MBA); and
- the purpose of your email (you wish to register for an FLS course).
Once you have taken your test, you must contact us at etudes@fsa.ulaval.ca to let us know the result of your test and the course(s) in which you will be enrolled. We can then help you plan your academic pathway over the subsequent semesters to ensure you satisfy the requirements without delaying your graduation.
The two charts provided below list all of the courses you have to pass in order to achieve the required level (fall, winter and summer). Based on your Test Laval results, and the semester in which you intend to enroll, you will be placed in the course that corresponds to your level.

Good to Know
- The Test Laval is only used as a placement test and cannot be presented as proof of language proficiency to satisfy the graduation requirements.
- Language courses do not contribute to the credit requirements of graduate-level programs.
- International students enrolled in a degree program at Université Laval pay the same tuition for FLS courses as Québécois students.
- Once you have met the program’s French proficiency requirements, we strongly recommend that you continue to improve your French-language skills by enrolling in FLS courses throughout your MBA program.
