the course of your studies and career, you will certainly be called upon to complete assignments that require research on your part. You will probably consult various types of documents, such as websites, books and articles published in periodicals. In your deliverables, you will then report on the ideas of various authors and perhaps even incorporate certain excerpts in support of your arguments. However, you must abide by certain rules to make sure you comply with copyrights and avoid finding yourself in a situation in which you have committed plagiarism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-baseul-block-accordeon baseul-accordeon-blue\"><h2 class=\"toggler-title-wrap\"><button aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggler-button\" aria-controls=\"What-isplagiarism\" id=\"What-isplagiarism_label\"><span class=\"toggler-title\">What is plagiarism?<\/span><\/button><\/h2><div id=\"What-isplagiarism\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"What-isplagiarism_label\" class=\"toggler-panel\" hidden>\n<p>A person commits plagiarism when he or she uses the ideas, productions or words of another person as though they were his or her own. For example, you are committing plagiarism when you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Copy a passage from a website, a book or an article <strong>without putting the excerpt in quotation marks or without indicating the source<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Present the original idea of another author in your own words (paraphrasing, summarizing or reformulating) <strong>without indicating the source<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Translate, either in part or in whole, a text <strong>without indicating the source<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use images, illustrations or tables without indicating the source<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You are not required to indicate the source when reporting a general idea or a well-known fact. For example, you do not have to specify a source for the following statement: &#8220;The crash of 1929 sparked the biggest economic crisis of the 20th century.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-baseul-block-accordeon baseul-accordeon-blue\"><h2 class=\"toggler-title-wrap\"><button aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggler-button\" aria-controls=\"Plagiarism-related-practices\" id=\"Plagiarism-related-practices_label\"><span class=\"toggler-title\">Plagiarism-related practices<\/span><\/button><\/h2><div id=\"Plagiarism-related-practices\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Plagiarism-related-practices_label\" class=\"toggler-panel\" hidden>\n<p>Plagiarism-related practices can occur during evaluations. For example, you are cheating if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collaborate with other people to complete an individual assignment (the assignments handed in are therefore similar or identical)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You copy the work of another person who has already taken the course with or without his or her consent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You sell or give away an assignment that has already been graded to another person for use in a course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You obtain, distribute or agree to receive exam questions or answers before the exam, without the teacher&#8217;s consent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are in possession of unauthorized material during an exam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You take an exam for another person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have someone replace you during an exam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You hand in the same assignment in different courses, without the teacher&#8217;s consent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You make up data or information in an assignment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-baseul-block-accordeon baseul-accordeon-blue\"><h2 class=\"toggler-title-wrap\"><button aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggler-button\" aria-controls=\"Penalties-forplagiarismorcheating\" id=\"Penalties-forplagiarismorcheating_label\"><span class=\"toggler-title\">Penalties for plagiarism or cheating<\/span><\/button><\/h2><div id=\"Penalties-forplagiarismorcheating\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Penalties-forplagiarismorcheating_label\" class=\"toggler-panel\" hidden>\n<p>Plagiarism is an offence under section 30 of the R\u00e8glement disciplinaire \u00e0 l\u2019intention des \u00e9tudiants et des \u00e9tudiantes de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval. Sections 31 to 45 of the R\u00e8glement cover other academic offences, such as cheating during an evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone found guilty of plagiarism or cheating is liable to one or more penalties, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being assigned a grade of &#8220;0&#8221; for the assignment in question<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being assigned a failing grade for the course in question<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receiving a temporary exclusion from the university<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being suspended from enrolling in 1 to 3 semesters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-baseul-block-accordeon baseul-accordeon-blue\"><h2 class=\"toggler-title-wrap\"><button aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"toggler-button\" aria-controls=\"What-todotoavoidplagiarism\" id=\"What-todotoavoidplagiarism_label\"><span class=\"toggler-title\">What to do to avoid plagiarism<\/span><\/button><\/h2><div id=\"What-todotoavoidplagiarism\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"What-todotoavoidplagiarism_label\" class=\"toggler-panel\" hidden>\n<p>To avoid plagiarism, you must always indicate the source of the documents you cite in your assignments, including any information found on the Internet. In doing so, you do justice to the authors in question, and make it possible for anyone reading your work to consult the sources used and check their credibility, if need be. Depending on the manner in which you wish to incorporate the information in your work, the table below lists the principal rules to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-table-blue\"><table><thead><tr><th>Actions<\/th><th>Rules<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Copying a short passage word-for-word (fewer than 3 lines)<\/td><td>Put the excerpt in quotation marks and indicate the source<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Copying a long passage word-for-word (more than 3 lines)<\/td><td>Offset the excerpt (block quotation) and indicate the source<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Reformulating a passage (paraphrasing, summarizing or rewording)<\/td><td>Change the words and the sentence structure, and indicate the source<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Translating a passage<\/td><td>Put the excerpt in quotation marks, followed by [our translation], and indicate the source<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A bibliography or list of references at the end of a document is not sufficient.
