Design Science Research in the Age of Generative AI.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is quickly becoming woven into organizational systems and work. Still, its probabilistic outputs, prompt sensitivity, vendor mediation, and drift unsettle core assumptions that have long anchored design science research (DSR), including that the artifact can be cleanly bounded, evaluation evidence can be interpreted as evidence about a stable contribution, prescriptive knowledge can travel with modest boundary specification, and practical validity can be treated primarily as utility in context. We address this disruption using a configuration-centric lens that treats GenAI artifacts as configurations-in-use: ensembles constituted by model/version, prompt regimes, retrieval and data provenance, orchestration constraints, and governance controls.
