Résumé
A Contextual Theory of Social Media Switching
Social media (SM) switching is a pervasive post-adoption phenomenon, yet existing research has predominantly focused on identifying predictors of switching intentions or behaviors. This techno-centric, decontextualized approach has overlooked the role of immediate and broader contexts in shaping switching processes and outcomes, limiting our understanding of SM switching as an ongoing, contextually embedded process. To address this gap, we conducted a longitudinal, grounded theory study within a nonprofit organization that adopted three SM technologies, examining how context shapes switching over time.
Our findings present a contextual theory of SM switching, framing it as a dynamic, contextually embedded process rather than a singular endpoint. We identify three interrelated switching practices—context crawling, context evaluating, and context switching—that collectively lead to distinct switching outcomes: shifting technical, social, or application contexts. By defining SM switching as shifting context, we highlight transitions within the same platform (technical or social contexts) and transitions to alternative platforms (application switching). This study advances IS research by redefining SM switching as an ongoing interplay between users and their contexts, offering a process-oriented model that enriches our understanding of switching as a multifaceted, temporally situated phenomenon.
