Cognitive warfare, the media, and the communication of scientific research

Until now, much research on online manipulation has focused on the spread of falsehoods and the idea of “information warfare”. This talk argues that we need to turn our attention to the larger threat of cognitive warfare: coordinated efforts to influence not only what citizens believe, but also what they value, how they feel, and how they think. We will discuss each of the dimensions of cognitive warfare, how they are evolving in light of growing geopolitical tensions and AI capabilities, and possible avenues of future research to explore.
