Immigration
The Université Laval website provides all the necessary information for you to undertake the procedures to obtain the required authorizations to come study in Canada. Don’t delay!
Health and Hospitalization Insurance
Federal and provincial immigration laws require non-Canadian students to hold valid health and hospitalization insurance for the entire length of their stay in Canada. At Université Laval, foreign students are automatically covered by the Université Laval group health and hospitalization insurance plan for the entire length of their stay. This insurance is mandatory and cannot be replaced by any personal insurance. Your personal insurance may apply, but only in addition to the coverage provided by Université Laval.
Some foreign students may be exempt from the Université Laval health and hospitalization insurance plan. Among others, these are students from countries with which the Québec Government has entered into social security reciprocity agreements (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal and Sweden). These students may qualify for coverage under the public plan administered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
In order to benefit from these agreements, the students in question must undertake certain procedures before leaving their country of origin and once they arrive in Québec. You must therefore check with the applicable health care organizations in your home country whether you are covered under such an agreement. You are also responsible for obtaining the required documents. For more information, refer to the Université Laval website.
Should you fail to complete these procedures, Université Laval will invoice you every semester for the amount incurred for health and hospitalization insurance, which costs approximately $1,000 for one year. If you do not pay that invoice, Université Laval will cancel your course enrolments.
