Immigration and Health Insurance
Immigration procedure
Once you have received your letter of admission as an exchange student, you can apply for the appropriate permit and/or visa to the Québec and Canadian immigration authorities. The procedure and requirements depend on your country of citizenship and the length of your study period (1 or 2 semesters).
Health and hospitalization insurance
To get the most out of your studies and make sure you’re covered in case the unexpected happens, you need health and hospitalization insurance.
Université Laval has a mandatory health insurance policy for exchange students. Make sure you read the terms and conditions of the insurance coverage before you arrive in Québec.
Some international students may be exempt from the Université Laval health insurance plan, including students from countries with which the Québec Government has entered into reciprocal social security agreements. These students may be eligible for coverage under the Québec Health Insurance Plan, which is administered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
You do not have to do anything to register for health and hospital insurance. You are automatically covered by the insurance plan once you are officially enrolled in your courses. The invoice will be sent to you at the end of September for the fall semester and at the end of January for the Winter semester.
