Software

The technological environment at FSA ULaval is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS. However, some software required in certain courses are only available on Windows. Mac users can therefore use the computer labs, collaborate with teammates, or install Windows on their device.

The Office 365 Pro Plus suite is offered for free through an agreement with Microsoft. Other software is are also available at a discounted price by visiting the website of the Direction des technologies de l’information (DTI), in the Logiciels pour les études section (in French only).

Recommendations

Consult the minimum software and hardware requirements necessary for the FSA ULaval technological environment and for the IT support provided by the APTI Help Desk.

Software

Under an agreement entered into between Université Laval and Microsoft, you can obtain Office 365 Pro Plus free of charge. It can be used with Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android operating systems.

Good to know

Can be installed and activated on 5 PCs or Mac OS computers, in addition to 5 tablets and 5 smartphones

Office 365:

Full usage rights during your studies and up to 6 months after graduation. After this period, the suite may only be used to view documents.
An Internet connection is required at least once every 30 days to keep the software activated on the device

OneDrive

Storage space allocated per student: 25 GB
Automatic deletion at the start of the 3rd consecutive semester without course enrollment, or at the start of the 5th semester following graduation

Installation

Uninstall any existing Microsoft Office suites from your device
Go to the Microsoft Office 365 portal
Sign in:
- Username: IDUL@ulaval.ca
- Password: PIN
Validate your identity for MFA
Click on Apps (in the left-hand column)
Click on Install apps (in the top right corner) and select Microsoft 365 Apps
Click on Install Office and follow the installation steps
On first launch, activate the product using the same credentials as in step 3

Logging in to Azure Dev Tools for Teaching

Go to Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (microsoft.com).
Click on Sign in (in blue, in the middle of the page).
Enter your IDUL@ulaval.ca and click on Connexion.

You will be redirected to the Université Laval authentication page.
Enter your PIN (the same one as for monPortail) and click on Se connecter.
In the Stay connected? Window, we recommend that you click on No so your identifiers are not memorized.
In the Conditions window, check off I accept the conditions…, you can uncheck the other elements, then click on Accept the conditions.
More information will be required to validate your identity. Click on Next and follow the prompts.
Automated calling system
Once the identity has been validated, click on Finish.

You will be connected to the Azure Dev Tools for Teaching portal.

Downloading Project

In the left-hand menu, click on Software.
If the left-hand menu does not appear, click on the Explore button in the Access student benefits section.
The left-hand menu should appear with the Software option.
In the Search field, enter Project. You will find Project Professional 2019 or 2021 in English and French.
To retrieve the activation key, click on the View Key button.
Take note of the key, as you will be asked for it the first time you launch Project.
Click on Download and save the file (.ISO) on your computer.

Installing Project

Go to where the Project installation file was downloaded (usually in your Downloads folder).
Double click on the file and wait a few moments.
You should see Setup appear. Double click on Setup to launch the installation.
Click on Yes to allow Setup.exe to run.
If you see the window below, click on the 64-bit installation button.
The installation should start, please wait.
Once the installation is complete, click on Close.

Activating Project

From the Start menu, find Project and launch it.
When asked for the activation key, enter the key you took note of.
As soon as the last character of the key has been entered, the key will be verified automatically.
If the key is valid, the Activate Office button should appear. Click on it to activate Project 2019.
Once the Project preparation is complete, click on Accept and launch Project.

Teams is a communication and collaboration software application for teaching and teamwork support. Among other things, it features group video conference and chatting capabilities.

Installation

Teams is automatically installed with the Office 365 suite from Université Laval. If it is not installed on your computer, here are the steps to follow:

Go to portal.office.com and sign in with your IDUL@ulaval.ca and your PIN
Confirm your identity using MFA
Find the Teams icon in the applications that appear on the portal’s home page
A new tab should appear and suggest you download the software
Download and then launch the software

Using Teams

If the software does not launch automatically:
- In Windows: Search for Teams in the Windows Start menu
- In Mac OS X: Search for Teams in the Mac OS X Finder
Enter your IDUL@ulaval.ca and click on Connexion
You will be redirected to the Université Laval login page
Enter your PIN (the same as for monPortail) and click on Se connecter
On the next page, uncheck Allow my organization to manage my device, and then click on No, sign in to this app only

When you are off-campus, the AnyConnect UL VPN allows you to access some ressources as if you were on campus.

Good to know

AnyConnect UL VPN must be installed
Once the software has started, connect to vpncampus.ulaval.ca
Log in:
- User: IDUL@ulaval.ca
- Password: PIN.
Multifactor authentification (MFA) is used when installing and using the client to confirm your identity.

Installation

Go to https://vpncampus.ulaval.ca
Sign in with your IDUL and PIN
Validate your identity for MFA
Click on Installation du Client AnyConnect (on the left)
Click on Start AnyConnect and follow the instructions
Click on the Download for… button
Save the application on your computer and run it
Follow the instructions

Using the AnyConnect UL VPN

Start the software via the Start menu (Windows) or Finder (Mac OS)
Enter vpncampus.ulaval.ca in the field
Click on Connect
Sign in:
- User: IDUL@ulaval.ca
- Password: PIN
Validate your identity for MFA

Disconnecting

Click on the AnyConnect client icon at the bottom of your screen Cisco VPN icon
Click on Disconnect

Free for all students

Under an agreement entered into between Université Laval and Microsoft, you can obtain a Windows 10 and 11 Education licence free of charge while you study at Université Laval.

Good to know

This licence may be used to:
- Activate or upgrade an existing Windows installation
- Install Windows and activate it
The licence may be used only once on a single computer, and may not be transferred to another computer
Perpetual licence: once activated, the licence remains active as long as the computer still works. The licence remains active when Windows 10 is reinitialized

Steps to Obtain a Windows Education Key

Logging in to Azure Dev Tools for Teaching

Go to Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (microsoft.com).

Retrieving the Windows key

In the left-hand menu, click on Software.
NOTE – If the left-hand menu does not appear, click on the Explore button in the Access student benefits section.
The left-hand menu should appear with the Software option.
In the Search field, enter Windows. You will find Windows 10 and 11 Education.
To retrieve the activation key, click on the View key button.
The activation key should appear right next to View Key.
You MUST TAKE NOTE of the product key. We recommend that you email the licence key to yourself.

Good to know

WARNING – To install Windows 11, your computer must be compatible. To check compatibility: How to use the PC Health Check app
NOTICE – You can still install Windows 10 if your computer isn’t compatible with Windows 11.

These steps must be completed using a functional Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11 operating system
Two types of installation media:
- USB flash drive (method recommended by the Help Desk):
  - Must be at least 8 GB
  - The flash drive will be formatted – all of the data will be deleted
  - DO NOT USE this flash drive for personal data afterwards
OR an ISO file burned onto a DVD
Once the media has been created, you will be ready to install Windows 10. You will find the instructions in the section titled Use the installation media to reinstall Windows 10.

Creating a Windows installation media

Download the creation software
- For Windows 10:
  - Go to https://www.microsoft.com/fr-ca/software-download/windows10
  - In the section titled Create Windows 10 installation media, click on Download tool now and save the file on your computer
- For Windows 11:
  - Go to https://www.microsoft.com/fr-FR/software-download/windows11
  - In the section titled Create Windows 11 installation media, click on Download now and save the file on your computer
Launch the downloaded file
Click on I agree if you agree with the terms and conditions of the contract
Select Create an installation media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC
Select the language. The Windows edition cannot be changed
For Windows 10:
- Select the architecture (64 bits vs. 32 bits).
  Recommended setting: keep the default 64 bits (x64) setting, as the 32 bits (x86) option will disappear
- Click on Next
Select USB flash memory disk to create a USB flash drive. Otherwise, select ISO file to burn a DVD
Click on Next

Follow the steps below based on the installation method selected (USB flash drive or ISO file).

USB flash memory disk option to create a flash drive:

Insert a blank USB flash drive. The list of flash drives will appear
Select the flash drive on which to create the Windows installation media
Click on Next
Caution! Any data on the flash drive will be deleted
The installation media will be created. Please wait
Once this step has been completed, click on Finish
A clean-up operation will be carried out, after which the window will close. You can then use the installation media

ISO file option:

Save the ISO file on your computer. To so so, a window will appear in which you can browse for the file and enter the ISO file name (the name is Windows by default)
Click on Save and the ISO file creation will begin. Please wait
Once completed, you can burn the file on DVD. You should be able to do so by selecting Open DVD burner
Once completed, click on Finish
A clean-up operation will be carried out, after which the window will close. You can then use the installation media

In the Search field, enter Visio. You will find different versions of the software. Select the desired version.
To retrieve the activation key, click on the View Key button. Take note of the key, as you will be asked for it the first time you launch Visio.
Click on Download and save the file (.ISO) on your computer.

Installing Visio

Go to where the Visio installation file was downloaded (usually in your Downloads folder).
Double click on the file and wait a few moments.
You should see Setup appear. Double click on Setup to launch the installation.
Click on Yes to allow Setup.exe to run.
The installation should start, please wait.
Once the installation is complete, click on Close.

Activating Visio

From the Start menu, find Visio and launch it.
When asked for the activation key, enter the key you took note of.
As soon as the last character of the key has been entered, the key will be verified automatically.
If the key is valid, the Activate Office button should appear. Click on it to activate Visio.
Once the Visio preparation is complete, click on Accept and launch Visio.
