Databases and Software
The trading rooms provide the Faculty’s students and researchers with access to the most comprehensive and most commonly used databases in the fields of finance, insurance and real estate.
These databases provide complete and reliable sources of information, which will make your research much easier.
Bloomberg
Bloomberg terminals are mainly used to search for and analyze financial information in real time. They include three levels: financial markets, market indices and individual stocks, and cross-sectional analyses.
Thomson Reuters Eikon/Datastream
This database provides the most comprehensive coverage of industry and historical financial information, including data on international equity, mutual funds, macroeconomics, bond markets, derivatives and commodities. Datastream provides the content and the tools required to make sound investment decisions.
Eikon Thomson Reuters
This software enables users to consult financial data from 77,000 international corporations, the constituents of all indices and more than 175 currencies from 2,000 sources. It also provides accounting data from corporations in 87 countries. The software covers all the major markets including stocks, fixed incomes, raw materials and exchange rates.
Morningstar Direct
Available at all work stations, this software provides access to Morningstar‘s database and global investment analyses. Designed primarily to serve financial institutions, it enables users to conduct the most comprehensive analyses. The software’s many tools allow for peer analysis, style analysis, performance evaluation, the creation of professional reports and exporting data to external applications (Excel spreadsheets). Users can also consult various data: historical portfolio assets; risk statistics; global investments; and fundamental data, value and growth characteristics.
WHARTON RESEARCH DATA SERVICES (WRDS)
The Wharton Research Data Services platform from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania provides 24/7 access to a pool of financial and accounting data from a dozen databases such as Compustat, CRSP Database and Osiris. Users can also launch simultaneous queries in several databases accessible via the trading rooms as well as the Bibliothèque de l’Université Laval.
Compustat
Accessible through the WRDS database, Compustat is the world leader in American and international listed company information. Standard & Poor’s Compustat specializes in the collection, standardization and presentation of corporate financial data. It provides more than 340 financial statements, reports, cash flow statements and more on an annual basis, and over 120 on a quarterly basis. The data are pooled from 10,000 active companies and 9,400 inactive companies. Here is the list of data available at the trading rooms: North America Daily, Global Daily, Historical Segments Daily, North America Annual Updates, Marginal Tax Rates, Legacy North America FTP, and Legacy Global FTP.
Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP DATABASES)
The files in this database cover common shares listed on the NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ. They provide uninterrupted time series by tracking the company despite changes in the CUSIP, ticker, corporate name, SIC code or the stock exchange.
Anaconda
Formerly known as Anaconda Distribution, this is the tool of choice for solo data scientists who want to use Python or R for scientific computing
GIT Bash
Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.
Matlab
MATLAB combines a desktop environment tuned for iterative analysis and design processes with a programming language that expresses matrix and array mathematics directly.

R
R is a freely available language and environment for statistical computing and graphics which provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques: linear and nonlinear modelling, statistical tests, time series analysis, classification, clustering, etc.
R Studio
RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE) for R. It includes a console, syntax-highlighting editor that supports direct code execution, as well as tools for plotting, history, debugging and workspace management.

With SAS Studio, you can access your SAS data files, libraries, and existing programs, and you can write new programs.

TeX

TexMaker

RIT et Rotman Portfolio Manager (RPM)
The RIT application is an order-driven market simulator which allows users to transact financial securities with each other on a real-time basis. RPM allows students to transact a wide selection of securities including: stocks, options, futures, forex, and bonds.

Université Laval’s Open Outcry Market Simulation
Université Laval’s open outcry market simulation is used in social activities and student competitions. This Web platform makes it possible to simulate stock market variations in a context of fictional scenarios, thereby providing participants with a unique experience in trading stocks and derivatives.

Fonds d’investissement des étudiants en sciences de l’administration de l’Université Laval (FIÉSA)
The Fonds d’investissement des étudiants en sciences de l’administration de l’Université Laval (FIÉSA) allows the Carmand-Normand and Jean-Turmel Deloitte Trading Rooms to offer students better access to Bloomberg terminals and to the RIT software. It is through their partnership that the Stock Market Simulation Club exists and allows students to prepare for the RITC competition.

Laboratoire d’ingénierie financière de l’Université Laval (LABIFUL)
Throughout the academic year, the trading rooms host various training sessions on quantitative methods. The Laboratoire (in French only) brings together researchers and instructors who are experts in advanced finance theory. Professor Issouf Soumaré is the person in charge of these activities.
R à Québec
This interdisciplinary symposium brings together researchers, students, practitioners and professionals from academia, government and industry. This one-of-a-kind event in Québec, specifically dedicated to the use of R in research and professional environments, provides an opportunity for the transfer of expertise among various disciplines, the advancement of practices and, for some, the leap into the world of R.

As an educational data science and programming platform, DataCamp is used in our training programs as a complementary tool in the teaching of R and Python. The platform supports education the world over, free of charge. Find out more.
Bloomberg
Bloomberg’s Experiential Learning Partner (ELP) accreditation is designed to recognize and promote academic institutions that are leaders in experiential learning by incorporating Bloomberg terminals into their programs. The trading rooms hold this prestigious accreditation in particular by making 12 Bloomberg terminals available to students at any time.

Scholarships and Competitions
In addition to accompanying students through the various stages of a successful academic pathway, the Carmand-Normand and Jean-Turmel trading rooms are first-rate financial partners for various organizations and events.
Among the most important of these partnerships are those entered into between the trading rooms and FSA ULaval’s Department of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate and Fonds Alpha (in French only).

Rotman International Trading Competition
Rotman International Trading Competition
As one of the most important trading competitions in the world, this event brings together representatives from some fifty universities from all over the word every year. The high-level challenges and stringent participant qualifications make this competition a unique forum in which to measure oneself against the best trading teams.
FSA ULaval Results

McGill International Portfolio Challenge
The Challenge is a business case study competition that focuses on innovative portfolio design and institutional asset management. Presented in partnership with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and several other major institutional investors, this competition offers cash prizes of up to $50,000.
Omnium financier
As the largest academic competition in finance and accounting in Eastern Canada, the Omnium financier brings together more than 350 students from 10 universities in the Regroupement étudiant des facultés d’administration de l’est du Canada (RÉFAEC). The purpose of the competition is to promote careers in finance and accounting by providing students a place and an opportunity to meet the industry’s main stakeholders.
Terms and Conditions of Use
In order to provide an exemplary work environment and to preserve the equipment and furnishings, the Carmand-Normand, Jean-Turmel and Deloitte trading rooms have established a Code of Conduct.
Failure to abide by the Code will result in your access to the rooms being withdrawn.
- Do not consume any food
- Drinks are only allowed in containers with a cover
- Show respect for the site, the equipment and the other users
- Do not leave personal effects behind to reserve a work station
- Hold an access card for use outside outside business hours
- Respect the intellectual property and copyrights of the databases and software
Under sections 63, 64 and 65 of the Règlement disciplinaire à l’intention des étudiantes et étudiants de l’Université Laval (disciplinary regulation for Université Laval students – in French only), students are strictly prohibited from:
- Using Université Laval’s computer resources for illicit purposes or using them in violation of the university’s regulations and policies
