Preparations
If you plan to study at Université Laval for more than 6 months, you must obtain a study permit and a Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ).
For more information, refer to the “Exchange Students” section on the Université Laval website.
Once you have submitted your exchange program application, you will receive an acknowledgement of receipt by email. In that email, you will find a link to the residence room reservation form.
By default, the length of a lease is 8 months if it begins in September, and 4 months if it begins in January. If you are coming to study for one semester (4 months) in September, you will have to lease the room for 8 months, and then submit a request with the Service des résidences de l’Université Laval to cancel the remaining months.
The Québec City Jean-Lesage International Airport (YQB) is served by public transit buses and taxi services. For more information, refer to the student welcome services section of the Bureau de la vie étudiante website.
Once your enrolment in your courses has been confirmed in monPortail, you will receive a message asking you to provide a photo online so your Université Laval ID card can be issued. Once the Registrar’s Office has received and approved your photo, you will get a second important message saying that your virtual ID card is available under the “Documents officiels” (Official Documents) section in your monPortail account, and that it can be accessed by downloading the monPortail app to your smartphone.
After you arrive in Canada, you must send all documents that provide evidence of your legal status to the Registrar’s Office using the Étudiants en échange – Dépot des documents / Exchange students – Submitting documents form. If you don’t comply with this obligation during the first two weeks of the semester, the Registrar’s Office will be required to withdraw you from all your courses.
At Université Laval, foreign students are automatically covered by the Université Laval group health and hospitalization insurance plan for the entire length of their stay in Canada. This insurance is mandatory and cannot be replaced by any personal insurance. Your personal insurance may apply, but only in addition to the coverage provided by Université Laval. There are a few exceptions. For more information about these exceptions, please refer to the Health and Hospitalization Insurance section of the Université Laval website.
You can have the academic contract and the departure and arrival attestations signed once you have received confirmation of enrolment in your courses in monPortail. Once your confirmation received, you can submit your documents to the Direction de programmes at office 1405, pavillon Palasis-Prince, or email them to international@fsa.ulaval.ca. Please allow 72 hours to have the documents signed.
Studies
You have to select more courses in the event that last minute changes should arise (schedule changes, course cancellations, etc.).
The official course outlines are only available during the first week of a semester. However, you may consult previous versions of the course outlines online. To view a course outline, simply click on the course number.
No. Unlike regular students, you may not change your courses at the beginning of a semester. You must therefore carefully read the course outlines, select your courses, and have them approved by your home university before the start of the semester.
The dates of the midterm and final exams can be found in the course outlines as well as the Midterm and Final Exams page as of the first week of the semester. You must schedule your return trip to your home country for the end of the exam period.
No. The Development and International Relations Department takes care of enrolling you in your courses before the start of the semester.
You can consult your schedule in monPortail (in French only), under the “Études” tab, in the “Cours” section. Make sure you have your unique Laval ID number (IDUL) and your password to log in to monPortail.
No. Makeup exams cannot be taken at Université Laval. Please refer to the Exam Policy for more details.
You will receive your academic transcripts by mail, free of charge, a few weeks after the end of the semester. They will be sent to the address that appears in your Capsule file. Make sure your contact information is accurate and up to date before the deadline the Bureau du registraire will send you by email. If your contact information is not up to date, you will have to order your academic transcripts and pay the related fees.
Student life
We strongly recommend that you take part in the Welcome Days activities as they have been specially prepared to help you settle into campus life and connect with your peers.
There is a gym on campus, in the PEPS, the largest university sports complex in Eastern Canada. Full-time exchange students benefit from preferential membership rates for the gym, as well as free access to other PEPS facilities such as the pools, jogging tracks and skating rinks.
If you hold a study permit, you may work either on or off campus.
Given that no courses are given during that week, you may plan to travel outside the city of Québec. Keep in mind, however, that the purpose of reading week is to help you get ahead with your studies and assignments.
